The first edition of Netguru Code College turned out to be a great success. About 6,600 people were interested in the event. We received 121 applications and, finally, we chose 20 eager developers to take part in the 2-week workshop. We hired four participants, who now put their skills into practice in projects for Netguru clients. Netguru Code College 1.0. The idea behind Netguru Code College was to get closer to the local developer community. We wanted to engage the most talented developers and create a space for them to grow their skills and to get a head start to a professional career. The courses during the 2-week workshop focused on different aspects of Ruby on Rails development: the specifics of the framework and the language, tips on writing quality code and testing, and a primer on the most useful libraries and resources. We also included meetings with Project Managers and Quality Assurance Specialists, with Netguru’s CEO, Wiktor Schmidt, and our Head of Growth, Radek Zaleski, to let the participants get a bigger picture of the product development process and our methodologies. The participants not only acquired valuable skills from experienced developers but also learned about the working culture in a software house – at Netguru in particular. The developers who took part in the workshops gave us positive feedback. They especially appreciated the dedication of our mentors, who did their best to impart their knowledge. They also emphasised that the workshop gave them a massive motivation boost to learn more and excel in the career path of a Ruby on Rails developer. Winter Edition This winter, we will...
Did I mention how awesome it is to live 30 minutes from a ski lift? In March of 2016, I launched a course called The Complete Guide to Rails Performance. Since then, I have sold just over 500 copies, for gross revenue of $131,521.20 ($1050/week). Although I launched the course in March, I had worked on it for about 4 months. Releasing the course has been a lifechanging event for me. For the first time ever, I made more money over a year from product revenue rather than service revenue. Releasing the course nearly doubled my usual freelancing rate, allowed me to change my lifestyle by moving to a ski resort town in New Mexico, and turned me into something of a minor Thought Leader ™ in the Ruby on Rails field. In this post, I’d like to share my process for creating The Complete Guide to Rails Performance (henceforth “the CGRP”), what I’d do differently in the future, and how creating a programming information product radically changed my freelance career. It would be immensely helpful to me if other programming authors (self-published or not) would email me to share their own experiences and results. I’m not sure if I’m an outlier or just the average case! The Path to Making Money While You Sleep I ain’t programmin’ here no mo’! I was on the first season of ABC’s Shark Tank when I was only 18 years old. I think “product money” is the eventual goal for nearly all freelancers or solopreneurs. There’s probably a lot of developers sitting on the sidelines too wishing they could tell their boss...

For now we are focusing on the basics. HTTP – The transport layer Every single thing you do on the web is built on top of HTTP, serving web pages, REST API’s, webservices. All of these technologies use HTTP as their transport protocol. When learning HTTP make sure you understand: How the request response model works. Headers and what they are used for. by Jeremy Stewart Illustrations by Rob Hudak If you’re like me at all , you love a good joke that’s related to web development — the more specific the better! Here are a few I‘ve thought up over the years. Some are good, some are cheesy, but all are guaranteed to have you laughing at your computer terminal for hours. Q: Why did the web designer drown? A: She didn’t know if she should float:left or float:right. Also, she had too many anchors. (thanks, @philbarker !) Q: Why was the web developer fired from his job? A: He was getting too Sassy. Alternate version: Q: Why was the web developer fired from her job? A: She did Less every day. Q: What did the Southern web developer say when he found out his team stopped using version control? A: Y’all better Git! Q: Why did the developer stay home from work? A: She had a code! Q: How did the scrawny web developer put on some muscle? A: He started using flex box (with float fallbacks for older versions of IE). Q: Why was the JavaScript reality show cancelled after only one episode? A: People thought it seemed scripted. Q: How can you tell that a web developer is working? A: You can hear him Grunting!A junior developer panicked when he realized he didn’t know how to initiate a secure shell session to a remote machine. As he became more upset and his voice grew louder, his boss — the senior developer — took notice and tried to quiet him down. With his finger pressed to the young developers lips,...
