Flutter is an open-Source framework to create high-fidelity and high-performance mobile apps for android and iOS. This framework makes things easier for all to build up the user interfaces which reacts smoothly in the app and reduces codes amount that is best required for synchronizing and updating the view of an app. Flutter is Google’s new framework which makes it easier for getting started by creating beautiful apps with its Cupertino (iOS) and material design behaviors and widgets. The users just love the natural look and feel of the app as flutter implements well the navigational patterns, platform-specific scrolling, the fonts and lot more. Flutter Apps In Dart One can feel much more productive and powerful with the functional reactive framework of flutter and with extremely fast hot reloading on emulators and devices. One can write the flutter apps in Dart. The dart syntax in this app development framework looks familiar if you know JavaScript, Java, Swift, and C#. The dart is compiled well by making use of the standard iOS and android tool-chains for a specific mobile platform where the app requires proper running. One can gain all the benefits of Dart language, which includes concise syntax, first-class functions, the rich standard of libraries, await/async and lot more. Here, this code-lab can offer deeper dive into the flutter than writing your first app of flutter. Why Make Use Of The Hybrid App Development, Flutter? One can be highly productive with it It is best developed for android and iOS from a single code-base One can do more with fewer codes and even on a single operating system with...

In 1886, the British archaeologist Arthur Evans came across an ancient stone bearing a curious set of inscriptions in an unknown language. The stone came from the Mediterranean island of Crete, and Evans immediately traveled there to hunt for more evidence. He quickly found numerous stones and tablets bearing similar scripts and dated them from around 1400 BCE. That made the inscription one of the earliest forms of writing ever discovered. Evans argued that its linear form was clearly derived from rudely scratched line pictures belonging to the infancy of art, thereby establishing its importance in the history of linguistics. He and others later determined that the stones and tablets were written in two different scripts. The oldest, called Linear A, dates from between 1800 and 1400 BCE, when the island was dominated by the Bronze Age Minoan civilization. Sign up for The Download — your daily dose of what’s up in emerging technology Also stay updated on MIT Technology Review initiatives and events? YesNo The other script, Linear B, is more recent, appearing only after 1400 BCE, when the island was conquered by Mycenaeans from the Greek mainland. Evans and others tried for many years to decipher the ancient scripts, but the lost languages resisted all attempts. The problem remained unsolved until 1953, when an amateur linguist named Michael Ventris cracked the code for Linear B. His solution was built on two decisive breakthroughs. First, Ventris conjectured that many of the repeated words in the Linear B vocabulary were names of places on the island of Crete. That turned out to be correct. His second breakthrough was to...

The Chubb’s Third Annual Cyber Report reveals employee education is key for small businesses to prevent cyberattacks. Even with headline after headline about the latest data breach, people are not encouraged to defend against their cyber exposure. The goal of the report is to determine the level of understanding individuals have about their cyber risks. While at the same time looking at the steps they are taking to protect themselves. For small businesses with limited resources, complacency can have detrimental consequences. This is because the chance of a small company going out of business after a cyberattack is highly likely. And the best way to defend themselves is by making everyone in the company more aware. This is what Fran O’Brien, Division President of Chubb North America Personal Risk Services, emphasized in the press release for the report. O’Brien rightly points out, “When it comes to your cybersecurity, there’s no such thing as being over-prepared.” He goes on to say, “While it’s important that the vast majority of respondents remain concerned about a breach, concern itself isn’t enough. Individuals often say their lack of cybersecurity action is because it seems too time-consuming in the moment. But implementing cyber safeguards today will save time and financial resources tomorrow, should a breach occur.” If you are a valued target, sooner or later a breach is very likely to take place. And just because you are a small business, it doesn’t mean you are immune to attacks. Because 43% of cyberattacks target small businesses. 2019 Cybersecurity Risk Statistics In the study, 70% of the respondents say their company has “excellent” or “good”...

My experience coding on the new MacBook when compared to the MacBook Pro This past month I’ve been using the latest Apple MacBook for web development. Let’s start with a couple of questions: could this laptop be the only computer I use? Probably. Would I want that? Hell no! Update: Soon after I wrote this, Apple upgraded the MacBook line. The new upgrade include a Skylake processor with integrated Intel HD 515 graphics supplying 25% faster graphics performance, and improved battery life. They also improved the 8GB RAM with faster 1866 MHz memory. And they even have a Rose Gold option now, if that’s what floats your boat! How I Work Everyone has their own workflow and habits, and everyone uses their computer for different tasks — my needs may not be the same as yours. To put this review in context, here’s the kind of work I do and tools I use: I do minor graphic editing, mainly converting vector AI files to SVG and tweaking colors. My main machine is a beefed-up 2012 Mac Mini sporting a 2.3GHz i7 processor, 16GB RAM and a 1TB SSD. I like to have as much information readily available as possible, so I use a dual monitor setup: one 27“ Apple Thunderbolt Display (important for the following review!) and one 24” Samsung monitor. To the left of my keyboard I have a Magic Trackpad, and on the right I have a Logitech Performance MX mouse with plenty of shortcuts mapped to the extra buttons. As a side note, I keep two panes open in Atom so I can review code side-by-side. Here’s what my setup looks like: That’s where I...

When was the last time you thought about your network security? It was probably more recently than your endpoint security. Most of the time, when thinking security, you want to protect stored data on a server or Wi-Fi. However, most users are more concerned with the data on their PCs or printouts. So many times, a mobile user will accidentally send a document to the wrong printer, or get distracted by what the passenger next to them is doing on a plane, or even leave their device in the back seat of a cab. All of these potential threats are easy to protect against if you know what to look out for. Over 80% of today’s workers prefer the benefits and perks of mobile devices, and a non-traditional work environment, posing a new challenge to keep company data secure. With almost 50% of small businesses having experienced a cyber attack, it’s more important than ever to think about your business’ security strategy. The average cost of one of these data breaches is $3.865M. The challenge is trying to protect from threats that are constantly changing and evolving. The Importance of Multi-Layered Security Endpoint security is more than creating a firewall to prevent hackers from getting into your network. It’s making sure your devices have secured features that are built in, not bolted on. As more employees are taking work on the go, multi-layered security provides peace of mind. Think of the last time you, or someone you know, left their phone in the back of a cab. Were you worried about the actual phone being lost, or was it the...

The first edition of Netguru Code College turned out to be a great success. About 6,600 people were interested in the event. We received 121 applications and, finally, we chose 20 eager developers to take part in the 2-week workshop. We hired four participants, who now put their skills into practice in projects for Netguru clients. Netguru Code College 1.0. The idea behind Netguru Code College was to get closer to the local developer community. We wanted to engage the most talented developers and create a space for them to grow their skills and to get a head start to a professional career. The courses during the 2-week workshop focused on different aspects of Ruby on Rails development: the specifics of the framework and the language, tips on writing quality code and testing, and a primer on the most useful libraries and resources. We also included meetings with Project Managers and Quality Assurance Specialists, with Netguru’s CEO, Wiktor Schmidt, and our Head of Growth, Radek Zaleski, to let the participants get a bigger picture of the product development process and our methodologies. The participants not only acquired valuable skills from experienced developers but also learned about the working culture in a software house – at Netguru in particular. The developers who took part in the workshops gave us positive feedback. They especially appreciated the dedication of our mentors, who did their best to impart their knowledge. They also emphasised that the workshop gave them a massive motivation boost to learn more and excel in the career path of a Ruby on Rails developer. Winter Edition This winter, we will...

To keep a small business in startup mode that requires you to stand on the brake. If you keep thinking what’s the right time to start a startup, then you never find the right time to start with! However, we’re going to share you the latest news, which would push you towards your goals in order to achieve them. According to the report, “The overall, venture investors put $28.67 billion to work across the Seed through technology growth stage funding rounds in the first quarter (Q1) of 2018”. This is up from $24.2 billion in Q4’17 and $18.23 billion in Q1’18. The drastic rise was driven by increased investment as Seed, Early-stage, and Late-stage, with round counts also up significantly from the prior quarter. It is upward trajectory, specifically at the Seed stage that could uplift concerns in the recent months about a decline in rounds for the very earliest stage startups. While seed deal counts remain well below peaks hit a couple of years ago, and projections show they are no longer falling. So, it...

Female experts in cyber harassment, slavery and climate change have been awarded hundreds of thousands of pounds as part of an annual fellowship recognising 26 young “geniuses”. Since 1981, The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation’s so-called “genius” fellowship grants are awarded annually to individuals, not institutions, to “pursue their own creative, intellectual, and professional inclinations,” according to the foundation. Criteria for the awards include “exceptional creativity” the “promise for important future advances based on a track record of significant accomplishments,” and a potential to produce new work. The foundation has named 1,040 geniuses since 1981. The grants are not conditional or relative to specific projects, however; the quarterly stipend supports recipients’ abilities to “exercise their own creative instincts for the benefit of human society.” We’ll tell you what’s true. You can form your own view. From 15p €0.18 $0.18 USD 0.27 a day, more exclusives, analysis and extras. “From addressing the consequences of climate change to furthering our understanding of human behaviour to fusing forms of artistic expression, this year’s 26 extraordinary MacArthur Fellows demonstrate the power of individual creativity to reframe old problems, spur reflection, create new knowledge, and better the world for everyone”, MacArthur president John Palfrey said in a statement. “They give us reason for hope, and they inspire us all to follow our own creative instincts.” Fellows include geochemist and paleoclimatologist Andrea Dutton and theoretical geophysicist Jerry X Mitrovica, whose works explore sea level rise, and marine scientist Stacy Jupiter, who studies conservation strategies to protect ecosystems and coastal communities. Did I mention how awesome it is to live 30 minutes from a ski lift? In March of 2016, I launched a course called The Complete Guide to Rails Performance. Since then, I have sold just over 500 copies, for gross revenue of $131,521.20 ($1050/week). Although I launched the course in March, I had worked on it for about 4 months. Releasing the course has been a lifechanging event for me. For the first time ever, I made more money over a year from product revenue rather than service revenue. Releasing the course nearly doubled my usual freelancing rate, allowed me to change my lifestyle by moving to a ski resort town in New Mexico, and turned me into something of a minor Thought Leader ™ in the Ruby on Rails field. In this post, I’d like to share my process for creating The Complete Guide to Rails Performance (henceforth “the CGRP”), what I’d do differently in the future, and how creating a programming information product radically changed my freelance career. It would be immensely helpful to me if other programming authors (self-published or not) would email me to share their own experiences and results. I’m not sure if I’m an outlier or just the average case! The Path to Making Money While You Sleep I ain’t programmin’ here no mo’! I was on the first season of ABC’s Shark Tank when I was only 18 years old. I think “product money” is the eventual goal for nearly all freelancers or solopreneurs. There’s probably a lot of developers sitting on the sidelines too wishing they could tell their boss...

Here’s How Lemonade, The Insurance App, Has Made Some Big Moves in the World of Insurance With These 4 Surreal Features Here’s How Lemonade, The Insurance App, Has Made Some Big Moves in the World of Insurance With These 4 Surreal Features This story lies information for financial technology startups and agencies, who want to create an insurance app like Lemonade. Herein we’ve rounded up four surreal features that you can give a thought. Time has changed. Today, people spend a huge time on their smartphones, and it is continuing to grow every year. As the devices are becoming more sophisticated, the number of activities that we can do on mobile is also increasing. And, it means that we are more likely to use mobile apps with greater frequency. That being also said that there is an app for everything from hiring a cab, tracking sleep activity to ordering food on-demand. Here, we will talk about the insurance app, which is known as Lemonade. This insurance app has made some big moves in the world of insurance. As per the latest report from TechCrunch, “Lemonade company uses AI (Artificial Intelligence) and chatbots to sell insurance”. Indeed, insurance is a pretty tricky business niche that depends on a lot of data science to right-size coverage. Lemonade is one of the first completely new entrants in the market to design a soup-to-nuts insurance business for the smartphone era. As per another report from TechCrunch, “Lemonade company has raised a total of $180 million, including a whopping $120 million round by SoftBank in December 2017.” Lemonade: The Insurance App A fully licensed...

By Sandra Guile Better Business Bureau October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) created by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and National Cyber Security Alliance to ensure everyone has the resources they need to stay safe and secure online. This year’s theme is: Own It. Secure It. Protect It. #BeCyberSmart. Own It. Understand your digital profile. Internet-based digital devices are everywhere. Without realizing it, they’ve crept into almost every aspect of our personal and professional part of lives: home, school, work, wearables, and automobiles. This presents plenty of opportunities for cyber threats to compromise personal information. Having a healthy understanding of what’s being shared, how it’s stored and where the information is stored is a start to protecting your data. Limit the types of information posted on social media—from personal addresses, to where you like to grab a coffee. What many people don’t realize is that these seemingly innocent details are all criminals need to know to target you, your loved ones and your physical belongings—online and in the physical world. Secure It. Cybercriminals are very good at getting personal information from unsuspecting victims or people who think they cannot become a victim. The methods that are being used are becoming more sophisticated as technology evolves, yet the methods to acquire passwords or usernames may be as simple as sending an email or text asking for the information. Add layers of protection by using multi-factor authentication and increasing your awareness of what’s coming into your email box. Then, shake up your password protocol by coming up with the longest, most creative passwords for social media and financial...

To speak bluntly, when it comes to its visualization capabilities, Tableau, while it appears so promising, astonishingly lacks in its ability to integrate seamlessly with statistical, hypothesis-driven testing. You may be let down constantly if you feel the need to not only visualize but compare your set of observations between groups on hard statistical grounds. Hence, one must admit that there is still a strong value gap between visualization tools like Tableau, and pure statistical software such as Minitab, SPSS, SAS, and, of course, the humble yet tremendously powerful and open source workhorse, R. Tables and corresponding computations, at least at the time of writing this piece, are not able to support statistical testing, such as testing for normality, pairwise comparisons, accounting for interactions between variables, linear regression, logistics regression modeling, and, in general, statistical modeling capabilities. As of now, only basic statistical measures (central tendencies and measures of variation) can be computed. Here’s some example data I’ve been playing with: As I look at the above shipping costs, a question comes to mind: How do I form a hypothesis about whether shipping cost varies by sub-category or not? All I can get from Tableau is perhaps a box plot to visually compare costs. Is that enough? Of course not. What I would like to do is to find the average or mean shipping cost for each category or sub-category and then form a simple yes/no hypothesis. Sadly, Tablau falls silent on this question. Maybe we can try different types of charts or compare data visually/manually across or down a table. Typical Tableau users may find themselves constrained if they...

All of these technologies use HTTP as their transport protocol. When learning HTTP make sure you understand: How the request response model works. Headers and what they are used for. The stateless nature of the web. Cookies and their purpose. The main HTTP verbs and...

How Fever, an Event Discovery App, Has Raised $20M in Series C Funding With These 5 Exclusive Features How Fever, an Event Discovery App, Has Raised $20M in Series C Funding With These 5 Exclusive Features This story includes information for startups and entrepreneurs. The crux of this story is the vital features by Fever (a successful event discovery app), which you can consider during event mobile app development. The event industry is thriving globally. However, there is no room of doubt that we also can’t underestimate the power of “live events”. In 2017, the number of mobile event apps has been grown-up by 20% year-over-year. Now, let’s first define what do we mean about the ‘event app’? Stating The Event App An event app is a mobile app that allows users or attendees to know the latest updates about the different events in their cities. Additionally, the core purpose of an event mobile app is to enhance the event through more intuitive, collaborative, plus it provides the user with digitally friendly experience. However, it can be achieved through core features which we’ll explain in the next section here.
