Major ASP.NET hosting provider infected by ransomware | ZDNet
SmarterASP.NET, an ASP.NET hosting provider with more than 440,000 customers, was hit yesterday by ransomware. The company is the third major web hosting firm this year that went down because hackers breached their network and encrypted data on customer servers. At the time of writing, SmarterASP.NET said it’s working to restore customers’ servers. It is unclear if the company paid the ransom demand, or is restoring from backups. A phone call to SmarterASP.NET was not returned. The company’s phone line was down, citing an influx of calls. In a status message posted on its website, the company admitted to the hack. “Your hosting account was under attack and hackers have encrypted all your data,” the message said. “We are now working with security experts to try to decrypt your data and also to make sure this would never happen again.” Attack happened on Saturday The attack didn’t just hit customer data, but also SmarterASP.NET itself. The company’s website was down all day on Saturday, coming back online earlier today on Sunday morning. Server recovery efforts are going slow. Many customers still don’t have access to their accounts and data. Those who do say their data is still encrypted, including website files but also backend databases. While most users where using SmarterASP.NET for hosting ASP.NET sites, some were using the company’s serves as app backends, where they were synchronizing or backing up important data. The fact that backend databases have also been hit, and not just public-facing web servers, has prevented many from moving impacted services to alternative IT infrastructure. 8 Things You Can Customize in Laravel Registration – Laravel Daily
Laravel has a great Auth system out-of-the-box, with just a few commands you can have Login/Register functions ready. But let’s dive a little deeper and see what we can easily customize. 1. Disable Registration What if your app has pre-registered users, or they are created by administrator, and there’s no public registration? Since Laravel 5.7, All you need to do is add a parameter in routes/web.php: Then you won’t see Register link in top-right corner, and the route /register will show 404 page. 2. Enable Email Verification Another new feature of Laravel 5.7 is email verification, with database field users.email_verified_at. By default, it is disabled, but all the necessary fields and routes are generated, just hidden. To enable this function, just pass a parameter in routes/web.php: Also, make sure to run php artisan make:auth so it would generate necessary views for users to see after they click verification links. Finally, if you need some routes available only to verified users, use verified Middleware: 3. Disable Reset Password By default, php artisan make:auth command generates the Bootstrap login/register pages, along with one for resetting the forgotten password. Cosmetics firm Avon faces new cyber security incident
Avon, the cosmetics brand that suffered an alleged ransomware attack in June 2020, has found itself at the centre of a new and significant security incident after inadvertently leaving a Microsoft Azure server exposed to the public internet without password protection or encryption. Discovered by Anurag Sen of security tool comparison service SafetyDetectives, the vulnerability meant that anybody who possessed the server’s IP address could have accessed an open database of information. The latest incident comes a little over a month after Avon confirmed a major security incident, although not confirmed to have been a ransomware attack, that took its back-end systems offline and left many of its renowned representatives unable to place any orders. According to SafetyDetectives, the leaky server contained API logs for Avon’s web and mobile sites, which means that all production server information, including 40,000 security tokens and internal OAuth tokens, was exposed. OAuth, an open standard authorisation framework for online token-based authorisation, enables end-user account information to be used by a third-party service such as Facebook or Twitter without exposing their credentials to it. Effectively, it acts as a go-between. OAuth tokens expire after a certain amount of time, which means users must generate refresh tokens to get a new one. In the case of Avon’s vulnerability, both sign-in and refresh tokens were exposed, which means it would have been possible for a hacker to gain full access to a user account. The server also contained internal logs that cyber criminals could have used to attack Avon’s IT infrastructure, or inject cryptominers, malware or ransomware into its systems.
